UNDER THE VOLCANO: - Sirens is a prime example of why I hope vinyl will never die out as a worthwhile format in the punk scene. There’s nothing cooler than picking up a cheap 7” from a band that looks kind of cool and just giving them a chance to show you what they can do. In this case, Sirens comes across with one of the best EPs I’ve heard in a long while. Sirens has a very Midwest Punk feel, think Punkhouse-era Screeching Weasel crossed with Lawrence Arms, with both Brendan and Chris singing, and you’ll have an inkling of what this band is all about. Only four songs here, but I think they represent fairly well what this band is capable of in the future. On badass colored vinyl as well! (7”)-McClernon
HEARTATTACK: - Sirens have two 7''s floating around right now and if you see either I suggest you get them. They play great, anthemic punk rock with a raw melodic edge. Featuring members of the Insurgent and Melee, Sirens will kick your ass with poignant songwritting and fun, poppy choruses. Seriously, I put their records on a mix tape and I find myself just rewinding the tape back to the start of the Sirens set over and over, neglecting the other stuff because the Sirens are fun to drive and sing along to. Fantastic. So, of course, they already broke up. LO
MAXIMUMROCK'N'ROLL: - You know I am not sure there is a decent song on this whole EP, but I don't really care. SIRENS bring a certain sincerity and feel to their music that I find refreshing. Sounding at times like a cross between the CONNIE DUNGS and RADON, SIRENS invoke the feel of the perfect band to play a Bay Area BBQ. You know, where life doesn't get any better than a cheap case of beer and seeing how high you can get the flames on the grill, all while waiting to eat and drink with friends. Life has good moments, and like this EP, they still make living more tolerable. (JF)
PUNK PLANET: - Sirens play earnest pop punk that reminds me of long-gone bands like Jolt and Weston. This record might have been run-of-the mill 10 years ago, but there are so few bands doing this sort of thing these days that it sounds surprisingly refreshing. (JC)
